With Spider-Man Far From Home now out to own and the news that Disney and Sony have resolved ownership of the character. Many are left wondering how the friendly neighborhood hero will continue with the MCU. Meanwhile, us here at ANG are here help fill in some potential blanks.
A blanket warning this article is mostly speculation and will contain spoilers from Avenger Endgame and Spider-Man Far From Home.
While many if not all of the MCU audience were celebrating at the news that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker would continue to be a part of one of the most successful franchises. But now many are wondering what’s next? And that’s a lot to wonder about.
With the end of Phase 3 and over 11 years of hard work, Kevin Feige and Marvel have crafted a universe that has yet to be mimicked. But after Endgame fans had to say goodbye to many characters that we have come to love over the years. From the one who started it all (Tony Stark) to the star of the next solo movie (Black Widow). With Far From Home, we got a bit of an epilogue to phase 3 and a cliffhanger that made news of Spidy leaving all the more tragic. But now Spidey’s back and with Phase 4 announced where is Spider-Man’s role?
Well, let’s start by looking at the current state of the MCU and Phase 4. The next movie set for release is Back Widow set for May 2020. This is followed by The Eternals, Sang Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Thor Love and Thunder. However, Phase 4 is the first time that part of the MCU includes TV series. Shows like The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, Loki, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, WandaVision, She-Hulk, and the What if…? series.
But that it isn’t all to consider. The merger with Fox will see that the worlds of the X-men and the Fantastic 4 return to Marvel. There’s also the (unfortunate) cancelation of the Netflix series to consider. Meaning the Defenders and the Punisher can appear in the MCU.
So while where there is a chance to see Spidey in phase 4, more than likely he won’t be back on screen till Phase 5. This is more than likely going to be the phase that he gets his third solo movie. Depending on how well the integration of the shows worked with the MCU, will shape future phases as well.
In a statement Kevin Feige confirmed that Spider-man was the only hero with the Superpower to cross cinematic universes. This has created many to speculate that any number of the web shooter’s arch foes to make an appearance.
So far villains like the Vulture, the Shocker, the Scorpion, the Prowler, and most recently Mysterio have made an appearance in the MCU. Daredevil brought the Kingpin to smaller screens. Over on Sony’s side, there was an attempt to give a villain a shot with their own movie with Venom. But this leaves the iconic villain of the Green Goblin/Norman Osborn to come into play as Marvel works out who the next big bad villain is. My money’s on Galactus. But while Marvel works on that I’m just going to cross my fingers on having J.K. Simmons as J.J. Jameson be in all movies as a cameo.
There’s also the chance that Peter Parker will appear in any one of the TV series. Like if there is a What If episode where instead of Peter Parker it’s Miles Morales, or if Gwen Stacy was there in place of M.J. and many more. Or have him appear in the She-Hulk series where it can act as an opener for the Fantastic 4 given that both have been members on the team in past comics.
While all of this is speculation, we toss the question to you. What do you think will happen to our favorite web slinger? What are you most looking forward to in the upcoming phase of Marvel properties?
