Last week, Ubisoft teased the latest installment in their Assassin’s Creed series, Odyssey. The teaser trailer was really short, and didn’t tell us a lot, but it had me interested. You can read about the teaser here. During their E3 presentation, Ubisoft showed us a great deal more about the game and I for one, cannot wait until it’s release on October 5th of this year! Here are a few of the features highlighted in the in-depth reveal earlier.

Choice is now your control

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey will allow more choices than in any of the previous titles, and these choices will effect gameplay. Interactions with NPC’s will now offer the player choices in terms of dialogue which will in turn effect the path of the story. This is an evolution from previous Assassin’s Creed games that were mostly linear. These factors all come together to create the first RPG in the Assassin’s Creed universe.

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey will also expand upon the gear and ability systems found in previous titles. The gear system will feature more stat enhancements than we have seen before in Assassin’s Creed. There are 5 pieces of armor, three weapons (including bow and arrows), and a for the first time, a horse.

The gear system in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey looks to offer the most options we have seen yet, which each piece having their own stats.

The ability system is also more robust than any other Assassin’s Creed game has had. There are 32 unique abilities and they can be enhanced more than once. In addition to having more skills, you will now be able to map them to the button of your choosing. This feature, new to Assassin’s Creed, will certainly make gameplay more unique than previous iterations of the series.

Conquest Battles

The new gameplay feature of Conquest Battles will shape the outcome of the story for you. These battles feature hundreds of combatants facing each in open battle. They will not require the player to take part in them, however it is probably a good idea to participate in them as they will directly impact the story as your progress through the game. Hopefully we will hear more about these battles as the release of the game draws near.

Improved Combat Mechanics

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey features some new combat mechanics. Parrying and dodging will play an important factor as they, combined with landed hits, help the player build up adrenaline which can be used to trigger special abilities. The change in combat breaks with previous Assassin’s Creed games that used primarily hit combos that are executed by hitting button combinations. The special moves in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey should add a new layer of sophistication to the combat system which will make it more exciting than the combat in it’s predecessors.

Additional details

As you would expect, there are several versions of Assassin’s Creed that will be available for pre-order and purchase, some of which include 3 day early access to the game which is set to be released in early October of this year. This game definitely has me excited for the fall! The graphics look stunning, and the combat appears to be very fluid. Since there are 8 area of Ancient Greece to explore, the area the game occupies should be larger than it is has been in prior titles. The trailers they showed today didn’t indicate how the Assassin’s were tied into this, but I am excited to see how it all comes together. I am also curious to see how they integrate Greek Mythology into the story. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is sure to be one of the hottest games of the year! Check out the two trailers Ubisoft showed during their E3 conference.
